Being Me
by Afrika Midnight Asha Abney

Being Me
praying,  mediating, dancing, creating, teaching, living, breathing, and flowing into the rivers with arms open wide
with hands touching society
with remedies filled with joy, beauty, harmony and prosperity
elevating mankind with rhythms of Mother Africa
embraced by sensual art filled with energy, heritage, roots and colors.

Being Me
watching the sunrise and sunset
hearing the cries of the children
hunger of Brothers and Sisters throughout the Diaspora
feeling the pain of society
loss loved ones during 911.

Together In Unity
we must continue to flow
like rhythms of Mother Africa
striving towards reaching the stars and mountains
of peace, freedom and liberation
empowering society with words and messages that
reflect our principles of living and growing.

Together in Unity
we must fight against the misperceptions of society
walk and dance into the wilderness
filling our soul
with colors of joy, hope and prosperity.

The Essence of Me
by Afrika Midnight Asha Abney

The Essence of Me
is filled with seasons of laughter
graced and dazzled by abundant blessings of love, joy, hope, harmony and unity
embracing the gifts of labor
constantly nourishing the soul with spiritual remedies and rhythms of Mother Africa
to heal and mend the mind, body and soul
rising high like the sun
upholding the seven principles of life
remembering the legacies of my ancestors
while adhering to my daily affirmations and goals
reflecting and looking within
teaching, reading, gliding, dancing, writing, and creating art to elevate society
into 360 degrees of power and unity.

The Essence of Me
means being the best beautiful black queen that I can be
being a great leader to the younger and future generation
excellent model to my little princess
healing and loving me for me
nothing less and nothing more!

African Roots
music, circles, dance, poetry, songs, folktales, art and theatre
all trace back into ancient civilization
reaching back into time
where great freedom fighters foot battles
picked cotton
searched for fluid and food
researching and planting seeds for a brighter tomorrow for generations to come.

African Roots
the essence of embracing the seven principles of living and growing.

LOVE IS UNITY
by Afrika Midnight Asha Abney

The picture shown is entitled: LOVE IS UNITY and is created and designed by Afrika Midnight Asha Abney.

The colors depicted are a portrayal of African- American heritage and culture. I believe that in love that all races can utilize the symbolism of the colors depicted with LOVE IS Unity. With appreciating and accepting one’s belief system whether in personal or professional relationship, one must acknowledge the value of love and kindness. In most instances people forget that LOVE MEANS WORKING TOGETHER through uplifting society.

LOVE IS UNITY
bounded by depth, principle, roots, solitude, honor, respect, representation and grace
destined by truth, loyalty, power and belief
sustaining the essence of the african proverbs and traditions
maintaining an unified lifestyle for self, family and nation

for LOVE IS UNITY!

Afrikan Heritage
by Afrika Midnight Asha Abney
(The picture shown is entitled: Afrikan Heritage. Afrikan Heritage is a print and also is the cover design for a greeting card. It is created by Afrika Midnight Asha Abney.)
Afrikan Heritage is an inspirational poem that demonstrates the strength and pride in Afrikan Heritage. I believe thay both the picture and poem shows that I am truly thankful for my ancestors and my roots in the Afrikan tradition. I believe that there are many of us that lost the Afrikan tradition or heritage. This picture and poem serves as a reminder for those have forgotten their heritage.
My Afrikan Heritage is filled with art, music, poetry and dance
to heal the mind, body and soul
surrounded by rhythms of life
cherished by colors and joy
nourished with the seasonings of Mother Africa’s words of wisdom.

My Afrikan Heritage is supreme
the root of my divine being.

Artist Spotlight: Phillip R. Spence, In Honor of Art and Music Month
by Afrika Midnight Asha Abney

(Painting by Phillip R.Spence and Photo Courtesy of Phillip R.Spence)
Brief Bio: Phillip R.Spence
Born in 1979, Phillip R. Spence grew up in Northwest, Washington DC, where the local attitude and culture was a world apart from the political establishment that the city is widely known for.   DC, however, offered Spence his first artistic opportunity at the Duke Ellington School of the Arts.  Thought of at first as an escape from the city’s deteriorating public school system, Spence never knew Duke Ellington would lead him to his career as a professional artist.

After four years of foundations, he spread his wings and moved on to higher education, attending Maryland Institute College of Art in nearby Baltimore.  At MICA he favored more realistic interpretations and majored in illustration.  Not knowing his next step, Spence graduated from MICA, unsure where he was headed.

Wanting a change of environment, he moved to Miami, where his father lived, and enrolled in an MFA program at the University of Miami.  It was in graduate school that he first began experimenting with abstract painting.  His painting process escalated to a point where he felt confident in his work and he began to show in galleries and exhibitions.

In 2005, he moved back to DC where he taught and illustrated for two years.  Constrained by a lack of studio space and financing, Spence began working on a smaller scale and using digital applications in his artwork. Despite the evolution of his process, Spence found DC different from the city of his childhood. He felt disillusioned and yearned for a more nurturing artistic environment.

At 29, Phillip R. Spence now resides and works in New Orleans, where he is continually inspired by its authenticity and creative spirit.

Visit his sites at www.philliprspence.com and http://www.wooloo.org/prspence/

What is your name?
My name is Phillip R.Spence.

Tell me something about yourself.
I was born in 1979 and grew up in Northwest, Washington DC, where the local attitude and culture was a world apart from the political establishment that the city is widely known for DC. I am a member of Black Artists of DC, Sojournals and Aesthetic Ascension.

I make abstract pictures in acrylic paint, ink, and or the computer. My work is born out a philosophy that things must be destroyed to create an opportunity for something new to be constructed. I use my compositions to explore color, shape, space in a way that I feel echoes a confrontation between the natural world and the artificial world.

What is your painting process?
My painting process attempts to capture my reaction to technology and nature. My work is intended as a document of the spiritual practice of observing and creatively reacting to the opposing forces of technological and natural subjects.
Who are some of your favorite artists?
Some of my favorite artists are Alma Thomas, Aaron Douglas, and Norman Lewis.

How long have been involved in the arts?
I have been involved in the art for more than five years.

What are some of your current exhibitions?

Tips on getting your child/children involved
by Afrika Midnight Asha Abney

This is an article that will provide you with some tips on getting your child/children involved. If you have a young child/children, then I would urge you to check out these tips.

1) Read A Book. If you are reading a book that is suitable for a child/children and he or she loves to read a book too, then read the book to them. This will not only give you a chance to complete the book, but expand the mind of a young child, as well as prepare them for a proper education. Additionally, it will become apart of your daily routine.

2) Newspaper. Get a newspaper and find a section of the newspaper that appeal to the both of you and read it.
3) Computers. Does your child/children love(s) computers? If so, then show them how to use one. This will give you a chance to do your work and increase their education.
4) Art. Does your child/children love painting, drawing, collages, writing, singing, music, or dancing? If so, then perhaps the both of you should work on a project together. Show your child/children how to do any of the following listed above. This will not increase your bonding with them, but give you time to complete your task at hand. Furthermore, it will increase their knowledge. You will find that they will usually catch on to the teaching within minutes and will become apart of a daily routine.

For My Father
by Afrika Midnight Asha Abney

For My Father
who guided and protected me
providing shelter for me and his family
always making sure that I was healthy
in mind, body and soul.

For My Father
who listened to my thoughts
watched my actions
made sure I stayed out of trouble
succeeded in life.

For My Father
who supported me along the way
counting each step that I made.

For My Father
who praised and loved me for me.
reached out his hands to me.

For My Father
who painted words
listened to music
danced through the waters of life
overcame each obstacle or family crisis
remaining strong in each battle.

For My Father
I create and dedicate this painting to you
'cause the way that I picture us
is in the painting inscribed.
For My Father
remember that we are rhythms
weaving color and harmony!

Loving you always!

Salute to Ancestors
by Afrika Midnight Asha Abney
(The picture shown is entitled: Salute to Ancestors.Salute to Ancestors is an abstract painting created by Afrika Midnight Asha Abney. This painting is dedicated to all of my ancestors.)
Salute to ancestors
who have built temples
walked across the platforms
picking cotton
fought in combat
stood against brutality, corruption, war, racism, poverty and much more
planting seeds
harvesting crops
walking down the aisles
holding hands
praying for a better day
hoping for equality and racism to end
may I offer this creation filled with beauty, color, strength and definition as my
legacy to saluting you
Harriet Tubman
Rev.Dr.Martin L.King, Jr
Rosa Parks
and many more....

Salute to Ancestors
who have made a difference in the lives of thousands of souls
danced with rhythms of life
created images full of power and grace
written words to inspire, heal and elevate the minds.

Salute to Ancestors
Salute to Ancestors is inspired by the abstract painting which is entitled: Salute to Ancestors and created by Afrika Midnight Asha Abney. I believe that the poem adds additional touch in saluting my ancestors.

Musical Man
by Afrika Midnight Asha Abney

This a poem that was inspired by a mix media collage which is entitled: Musical Man and created by Afrika Midnight Asha Abney.

Musical Man play that music
elevate mind,body and soul
fill my spirit with tunes that make me move and groove
sway and dive into the tunes of beauty, grace and harmony
lifting me up into the horizons of the hemisphere.
